General Dentists (DDS or DMD) are primary care providers for oral health, focusing on preventative care, diagnosing and treating dental diseases, managing tooth replacement needs, performing oral cancer screenings, and collaborating with primary care physicians to address the connection between oral and overall systemic health. I always tried to focus my care on building relationships, and treating the whole person. When I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, and went through the healing process, I learned just how important those things are from a patient's perspective. As a result, I focus more on holistic, preventive care. But more than that, I've learned that each patient is an individual, and deserves more respect than a one-size-fits-all approach. She earned her degree from Texas Christian University in 2003. Our mission is to support people in their journey to health by educating and holistically serving their needs with integrity and respect, using natural, non-toxic products and treatments whenever possible. We promise to treat you as we would treat our family, focusing on your overall wellness rather than just the health of your teeth. We look forward to being your new dental home! Dr. Toni Engram provides consultations primarily in English. New patients are welcome; please call (972) 723-1035 to schedule an appointment.

As your primary healthcare provider, Dr. Engram offers expert diagnosis and management for a wide range of common health conditions. Common areas of focus include:

  • Grinding of Teeth: Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is a condition where you clench or grind your teeth, often during sleep, and your dentist can help diagnose and treat it with custom mouthguards or other solutions.
  • Gum Disease: Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums that can damage the soft tissues and bones supporting your teeth, and your dentist can help manage it with cleanings and treatments.
  • Tooth Decay: Tooth decay is a gradual process of erosion of the tooth surface that can lead to pain and infection, which your dentist can repair and prevent from worsening.
  • Tooth Demineralization: Tooth demineralization is the process where acid wears away the minerals in your tooth enamel, leaving it vulnerable to decay; your dentist will diagnose and develop a treatment plan to restore your teeth's health.
  • Tooth Discoloration: Tooth discoloration is a change in the natural color of your teeth, and a general dentist can help determine the cause and recommend treatments like whitening or veneers.
  • Tooth Loss: Tooth loss is the absence of one or more teeth, and a general dentist can help replace missing teeth with dentures, bridges, or implants.
  • Amelogenesis Imperfecta: If you or your child has amelogenesis imperfecta, a general dentist can help manage the condition by monitoring your teeth, providing preventative care, and recommending treatments to improve your smile and protect your teeth.

This list represents some of the common conditions treated. An accurate diagnosis and a personalized care plan can only be developed through a direct consultation with a qualified medical professional.

To provide comprehensive and patient-centered care, Dr. Engram offers a range of services designed to diagnose, manage, and treat various health concerns:

  • Dental Bonding: Dental bonding uses a tooth-colored resin to repair chipped or cracked teeth, improve their appearance, and close gaps between teeth.
  • Lower Dentures: Lower dentures are custom-made appliances that replace missing lower teeth, improving your bite and overall oral health.
  • Dental Crown: A dental crown is a cap placed over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance.
  • Teeth Scaling: Scaling helps to prevent gingivitis and periodontitis by eliminating bacteria and reducing inflammation around your teeth and gums.
  • Non-Surgical Gum Treatment: Non-surgical methods like deep cleaning can help save your teeth and gums from the damage caused by gum disease, before surgery becomes necessary.
  • Denture Repair: Through denture repair, your dentist can make adjustments to improve the fit and functionality of your dentures.
  • Ultrasonic Dental Cleaning: An ultrasonic dental cleaning helps to remove stubborn stains and plaque buildup that regular brushing and flossing might miss, improving your smile's appearance and oral health.
  • Dental Bridge: A bridge is a fixed prosthetic that's cemented into place, providing a long-lasting replacement for missing teeth.
  • Simple Tooth Extractions: Simple tooth extractions are a common treatment for removing teeth that are beyond repair, relieving pain and improving your smile.
  • Root Canal: When decay or trauma deeply affects a tooth, a root canal is performed to remove the infected pulp, disinfect the area, and fill it to prevent future infection.
  • Root Planing: To treat gum disease effectively, your dentist may recommend root planing, a deep cleaning that smooths the tooth roots, allowing your gums to reattach and heal.
  • Porcelain Veneers: To get veneers, your dentist will prepare your teeth and then custom-fit and bond the porcelain shells to create a stunning and natural-looking smile.

Here are answers to some common questions about receiving General Dentistry care with Dr. Engram:

How is my dental health connected to my overall health, like my heart?
Your oral health is critically linked to your overall health, including your heart. Bacteria from chronic gum disease can enter your bloodstream, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke, and poorly controlled diabetes. Regular dental care is essential for maintaining not only healthy teeth but also your overall well-being.
My medications make my mouth constantly dry. Is this a dental problem?
Yes, dry mouth (xerostomia) is a common side effect of many medications. Saliva is the body's natural defense against cavities, so a dry mouth significantly increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Dr. Engram can recommend special rinses, gels, and other strategies to manage dry mouth.
My dentures don't fit as well as they used to. What can be done?
Over time, the jawbone and gums change shape, which can cause dentures to loosen. A relining procedure can reshape the denture for a better fit, or a new denture may be necessary if the current one is significantly worn. Maintaining a proper fit is crucial for comfortable eating and speaking.
What is an oral cancer screening and is it part of my check-up?
An oral cancer screening is a quick, painless visual inspection of the lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, and throat for any unusual sores or discolorations. Dr. Engram performs this vital part of every routine dental exam to help detect potential problems early. Early detection is key to successful treatment.
What can I do about sensitive teeth?
Tooth sensitivity is often caused by receding gums exposing the tooth root or worn-down enamel. Dr. Engram can recommend desensitizing toothpastes, fluoride treatments, or check for other issues like cavities or cracked teeth.
If I need a root canal, will I have to see a specialist?
General dentists like Dr. Engram can perform many root canals. For more complex cases, a referral to an endodontist may be needed. Many root canals can be performed right here in our office. For more complex cases, such as a difficult-to-reach molar, a referral may be made to an Endodontist (a root canal specialist) to ensure the best possible outcome.
Is it normal for my gums to bleed when I brush or floss?
No, healthy gums should not bleed when brushing or flossing. Bleeding is usually the first sign of gum inflammation (gingivitis), which can progress to more serious gum disease if left untreated. This is often reversible with a professional cleaning and improved daily oral hygiene.
Are dental implants a good option for replacing missing teeth?
Dental implants are often an excellent long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. They provide a secure foundation for a crown or bridge that looks and feels natural, and can help preserve the jawbone. If you have sufficient jawbone health, implants may be a good option for you.
