As your primary healthcare provider, Dr. Emmons offers expert diagnosis and management for a wide range of common health conditions. Common areas of focus include:

  • Lockjaw: Lockjaw, or tetanus, is a serious bacterial infection that can cause painful muscle spasms, and while not directly treated by dentists, they can assess your mouth for potential entry points of the bacteria during a routine exam.
  • Broken Tooth: A broken tooth can lead to infection and serious complications if left untreated, so see your dentist as soon as possible.
  • Candidiasis of Mouth: Oral thrush is a common fungal infection that appears as creamy white lesions on the tongue or inner cheeks, and your dentist can prescribe medication to eliminate it.
  • Clicking of Temporomandibular Joint: Jaw clicking is often associated with TMJ problems; your dentist can evaluate the condition and develop a personalized treatment plan to alleviate discomfort.
  • Crossbite: If your teeth don't meet evenly, you might have a crossbite, a condition a general dentist can diagnose and help fix.
  • Lichen Planus: Lichen planus is a long-term condition causing inflammation in the mouth, leading to discomfort and sometimes sores. Your dentist plays a key role in its management and monitoring.
  • Oral Infection: Oral infections, such as gingivitis or periodontitis, are infections affecting the gums and teeth; your dentist helps treat and prevent them through cleaning, antibiotics, and other therapies.

This list represents some of the common conditions treated. An accurate diagnosis and a personalized care plan can only be developed through a direct consultation with a qualified medical professional.

To provide comprehensive and patient-centered care, Dr. Emmons offers a range of services designed to diagnose, manage, and treat various health concerns:

  • Dental X-Ray: A dental X-ray is a quick, painless way for your dentist to see inside your teeth and gums to find hidden decay or bone loss.
  • Preseason Dental Exam: Protect your smile! A preseason dental exam allows your dentist to find and fix any dental problems that might worsen with increased activity.
  • Pediatric Dental Exam: Pediatric dental exams are crucial for maintaining your child's oral health throughout their development and preventing costly dental issues later.
  • Dental Filling: Dental fillings restore damaged teeth, preventing further decay and preserving your natural tooth structure.
  • Dental Cleaning: During a dental cleaning, your dentist or hygienist will remove plaque and tartar, polish your teeth, and check for any signs of gum disease or decay.
  • Dental Bonding: Bonding is a cosmetic procedure that can fix minor imperfections in your teeth, such as discoloration or small gaps, making your smile look better.
  • Dentures: If you've lost some or all of your teeth, dentures are custom-made appliances that restore your smile and chewing function.
  • Teeth Polishing: Teeth polishing removes surface stains from your teeth, leaving them smoother and brighter.
  • Implant-Supported Dentures: These dentures are attached to implants surgically placed in your jawbone, providing a better fit, improved chewing ability, and increased confidence.
  • Dental Implant: If you're missing teeth, dental implants can act like real tooth roots, supporting crowns or dentures for a natural-looking and functioning smile.
  • Fluoride Treatment: During a fluoride treatment, a gel or varnish is applied to your teeth to increase their fluoride levels and prevent cavities.
  • Teeth Scaling: This procedure is a key part of preventative dental care, keeping your teeth and gums healthy and reducing your risk of serious dental problems.

Here are answers to some common questions about receiving General Dentistry care with Dr. Emmons:

How is my dental health connected to my overall health, like my heart?
Your oral health is critically linked to your overall health, including your heart. Bacteria from chronic gum disease can enter the bloodstream, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke, and poorly controlled diabetes. Regular dental care is essential for maintaining not only healthy teeth and gums, but also your overall well-being.
My medications make my mouth constantly dry. Is this a dental problem?
Yes, dry mouth (xerostomia) is a common side effect of many medications. Saliva is the body's natural defense against cavities, so a dry mouth significantly increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Dr. Emmons can recommend special rinses, gels, and other strategies to manage dry mouth.
Is it normal for my gums to bleed when I brush or floss?
No, healthy gums should not bleed. Bleeding when brushing or flossing is usually the first sign of gum inflammation (gingivitis). This is often reversible with a professional cleaning and improved daily oral hygiene, but if left untreated, it can progress to more serious gum disease.
What is the difference between a crown and a filling?
A filling is like a patch to repair a small area of damage, while a crown is a cap or helmet that covers the entire tooth. Crowns are used when a tooth is severely damaged, cracked, or has had a root canal, providing extra strength and protection.
If I need a root canal, will I have to see a specialist?
General dentists, like Dr. Emmons, can perform many root canals. For more complex cases, a referral to an endodontist may be necessary to ensure the best possible outcome. Many root canals can be performed right here in the office by Dr. Emmons.
What is an oral cancer screening and is it part of my check-up?
An oral cancer screening is a quick, painless part of every routine dental exam. Dr. Emmons will visually inspect your lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, and throat for any unusual sores or discolorations. Early detection is key to successful treatment.
Are dental implants a good option for replacing missing teeth?
Dental implants are often an excellent, long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. They provide a secure foundation for a crown or bridge that looks and feels natural, and help preserve the jawbone.
My dentures don't fit as well as they used to. What can be done?
Over time, jawbone and gum tissue change, sometimes causing dentures to loosen. Dr. Emmons can reline existing dentures to reshape them for a better fit, or create a new set if the current one is significantly worn. A proper fit is important for comfortable eating and speaking.
