As your primary healthcare provider, Dr. Nielsen offers expert diagnosis and management for a wide range of common health conditions. Common areas of focus include:
- Dry Tooth Socket: A dry socket is a painful complication after a tooth extraction where the blood clot doesn't form properly, and your dentist can help manage the pain and promote healing.
- Mouth Lesions: A general dentist can evaluate suspicious mouth lesions, potentially preventing or early detecting oral cancer which is extremely important for improving treatment outcomes.
- Black Hairy Tongue: Characterized by a dark, furry-looking tongue, black hairy tongue is a mostly harmless condition your dentist can help clear up with guidance on better brushing and cleaning.
- Tooth Displacement: Experiencing a tooth that's shifted or moved unexpectedly? This is called tooth displacement, and your general dentist can address this issue, offering options like braces or extractions.
- Gummy Smile (Oversized Gingiva): Having more gum tissue showing than usual when smiling is called a gummy smile, something a general dentist can address with procedures like gum contouring or crown lengthening.
- Sensitive Teeth: Experiencing pain in your teeth from temperature or pressure? This sensitivity is treatable with various options available from your dentist.
- Gingivitis: Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease where your gums become inflamed and red, and your dentist can help treat it with professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene.
- Dental Injury: Your dentist is the best resource for treating dental injuries, from fixing chips and cracks to addressing more serious trauma to your teeth and jaw.
- Cracked Tooth: Experiencing pain or sensitivity in a tooth might indicate a crack; a general dentist can accurately identify the crack's location and severity and provide appropriate restorative solutions to prevent further complications.
- Tender Gums: Experiencing tender gums? A general dentist can determine the cause, whether it's simple inflammation or something more complex, and provide appropriate treatment.
- Dental Crowding: Misaligned or overlapping teeth due to lack of space are a condition known as dental crowding; your general dentist can assess and treat this issue, potentially using orthodontics or extractions.
- Tooth Malformation: If your teeth have unusual shapes or sizes due to a condition called tooth malformation, a general dentist is the right professional to help you understand and manage this issue.
This list represents some of the common conditions treated. An accurate diagnosis and a personalized care plan can only be developed through a direct consultation with a qualified medical professional.
To provide comprehensive and patient-centered care, Dr. Nielsen offers a range of services designed to diagnose, manage, and treat various health concerns:
- Ceramic Dental Crowns: Ceramic crowns are tooth-shaped caps placed over damaged teeth to restore their shape, strength, and appearance.
- Dental Crown: When a tooth is significantly decayed or broken, a crown acts like a protective shell to prevent further damage and improve its function.
- Athletic Mouthguards: Your dentist can create a personalized mouthguard that fits comfortably and provides optimal protection.
- Dental Filling: A dental filling is a treatment to rebuild a damaged tooth and restore its shape and function after decay or injury.
- Dental Bonding: To improve the look of your teeth, your dentist might use dental bonding to cover stains or reshape teeth that are uneven or misshapen.
- Ultrasonic Dental Cleaning: This specialized cleaning uses high-frequency vibrations to thoroughly clean your teeth and gums, preventing cavities and gum disease.
- Gum Disease Treatment: Treatment for gum disease aims to stop the progression of gum disease and improve gum health.
- Dentures: Dentures offer a comfortable and functional way to regain your smile and improve your quality of life after tooth loss.
- Fluoride Treatment: Fluoride treatments are a simple and effective way to reduce your risk of developing cavities and maintain good oral health.
- Teeth Polishing: Teeth polishing removes surface stains from your teeth, leaving them smoother and brighter.
- Dental Examination: A dental examination involves a visual inspection, X-rays (sometimes), and cleaning to identify and address existing dental problems.
- Porcelain Veneers: If you have discolored, misshapen, or slightly crooked teeth, porcelain veneers can create a straighter, brighter smile by covering the imperfections.

Here are answers to some common questions about receiving General Dentistry care with Dr. Nielsen:
- How is my dental health connected to my overall health, like my heart?
- Your oral health is critically linked to your overall well-being. Bacteria from chronic gum disease can enter your bloodstream, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke, and poorly controlled diabetes. Regular dental care is therefore essential for maintaining not only healthy teeth but also your overall health.
- My medications make my mouth constantly dry. Is this a dental problem?
- Yes, dry mouth (xerostomia) is a common side effect of many medications. Saliva is the body's natural defense against cavities, so dry mouth significantly increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Dr. Nielsen can recommend special rinses, gels, and other strategies to manage dry mouth.
- What is the difference between a crown and a filling?
- A filling is like a patch to repair a small area of a damaged tooth. A crown is like a cap or helmet that covers the entire tooth, used when a tooth is significantly damaged, cracked, or has had a root canal to provide strength and protection.
- What is an oral cancer screening and is it part of my check-up?
- An oral cancer screening is a quick, painless visual inspection of your lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, and throat for any unusual sores or discolorations. Dr. Nielsen performs this important screening during every routine dental exam to detect potential issues early, which is key to successful treatment.
- Is it normal for my gums to bleed when I brush or floss?
- Healthy gums do not bleed. Bleeding while brushing or flossing is usually the first sign of gum inflammation (gingivitis). This is often reversible with a professional cleaning and improved daily oral hygiene, but if left untreated, it can progress to more serious gum disease.
- Are dental implants a good option for replacing missing teeth?
- Dental implants are often an excellent long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. They provide a secure foundation for a crown or bridge, restoring a natural look and feel, and can help preserve the jawbone.
- My dentures don't fit as well as they used to. What can be done?
- Over time, the jawbone and gums change shape, which can loosen dentures. Dr. Nielsen can reline the existing dentures to reshape them for a better fit, or create a new set if the current one is significantly worn. A proper fit is essential for comfortable eating and speaking.
- What can I do about sensitive teeth?
- Sensitivity is often caused by receding gums exposing the tooth root, or by worn-down enamel. Dr. Nielsen can recommend desensitizing toothpastes, apply fluoride treatments, or check for other issues like cavities or cracked teeth that could be causing the sensitivity.
